Most common issues with Laptop Batteries

 1.      My battery will not hold a charge!” Advice: If you got a laptop battery from us make sure you charge it in your laptop for 24 hrs before the first use. Even when the green light indicator shows that the battery is fully charged, that might not be the case.  In many cases our batteries stay on the shelf for weeks and that can turn them to the “Dormant” state.  Overnight charging will fix this condition in most cases, if not call us at 800 556 4490 for a return authorization and we will gladly replace it for you if is still under warranty.

 2.       “My battery does not carry the same Part Number/Sticker as the original one” The reason for this is that  manufacturers often change the part numbers on their parts, even when they don’t make any improvements or changes. This is usually done for internal logistics reasons, such as using different factories or based on the date of manufacture. You should not worry, as long as you get a physical fit, (you can insert it properly). We have gone to great lengths to assure compatibility with our batteries, and they should work fine. If not call us at 800 556 4490 for a return authorization and we will gladly replace it for you if is still under warranty.

 3.      “My battery will not fit” Advice: Many laptops take a primary and a secondary battery. Most of the time they are different shapes. Please check that you are not trying to use a secondary battery in the slot for the main one. Also sometimes, batteries come in a case (or need to be inserted in a case) to adapt them to become primary or secondary. If you still experience problems, call us at 800 556 4490 for a return authorization and we will gladly replace it for you if is still under warranty.

 4.      “The battery I received has scratches/marks on the connectors” The Reason is that we many times test and recharge our batteries before sending them out. To do that we need to put them in a recharger/conditioner, and that can give them the “used” appearance. You should not worry, you didn’t received a used or refurbished battery, unless it was advertised as refurbished. If this does not satisfy you, call us 800 556 4490 for a return authorization and we will gladly replace it for you if is still under warranty.

Most common issues with AC Adapters:

 1.      “The AC Adapter I got does not look the same/different Part Number with the original one” Our company has developed our own brand of AC adapters to replace those that the manufacturers have discontinued. Do not worry, we have  tested this AC adapters for the correct voltage, amperage cutoff, and we also plugged them into the specific laptop and have made sure they power it and they charge the battery.

Most common issues with hard drives

 1.      “I plugged in the new hard drive, the computer won't boot up” Most of the time this is because you have a blank hard disk. Your files and operating system are still on the old one. See the instructions included with the HDD for more info. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490!

 2.      “The BIOS won’t recognize the new hard disk” Many times you might need a BIOS upgrade (Software) in order to use HDD’s larger then the original ones. The BIOS upgrades are usually downloadable from the site of the manufacturer of your laptop. They are model specific, so we do not carry or sell them.  Make sure you have power “OFF” when you swap hard drives. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490!

 3.      “The screw-holes on the new hard drives are farther apart than the original one” Yes, we have seen this quite a bit. The manufacturers of laptop hard drives changed the standard for the screw-holes in 1996-1997. If you are going to upgrade you will have to accept this condition. We found it not to be a big problem, most of the time the hard disk is between brackets so tight that it requires no screws. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490!

 4.      “The hard disk I got is 1/8” slimmer then the original one” Very common question, this happens because the newer drives are only 9 MM high while your original was 12 MM or 19 MM high. It will work fine, if it rattles, try inserting some shock absorbing materials in the space left. Folded paper or packing foam will work. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490!

 5.     “The new hard drive looks different or the connector looks different than the old one” Your original hard disk is still probably in the case. Some manufacturers put the HDD in a case specific to a laptop or a series of laptops.  You have purchased from us a bare drive. You will need to take the case apart, disconnect the old HDD from the connector and connect the new one in its place. Make sure that you plug in into the same position (Same side is on the top). Advice on Laptop Memory

1.    “I inserted the memory but I can’t see any increase in the control panel.”  Most of the time reinserting the memory will fix this problem. After you power off, remove the newly inserted memory and push it back in. Most of the memory installs by inserting it into the slot and then latching it in. Make sure that you push it in all the way before latching it. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490 we might nee to replace your memory!

2.    “Can’t find the place to install the memory” Most of the time that place is under the laptop, accessible by opening a window, closed by one or two screws. Other models have the memory under the keyboard, so you’ll have to remove the keyboard. If this quick hints did not get you there, look in the user manual of your laptop, or call the manufacturer for support. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490!

3   “I received two pieces of memory, but I only ordered one!” Some laptop models accept new memory in pairs only. So if you ordered a 32 MB upgrade, we sent you two 16MB chips. They both must be installed at the same time, the laptop won’t work with only one. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490

4   “After installing the memory, I get an unusual message from the CMOS Setup” Most likely, the CMOS has detected the memory upgrade and it is asking if you want to make that change permanent. The exact message varies from one manufacturer to another, but generally, you will want to go to the CMOS setup and save changes before exiting. More details can be found in the laptop user manual.

5   “I can not find an empty spot to add the new memory upgrade” So you opened the memory upgrade compartment and you found it filled with other modules. This means that someone before you upgraded this laptop. However it may be so that the upgrade you just bought is larger than what you have in the laptop and you can still replace them. For example, you have a 32 MB upgrade installed and you just bought a 64MB, you would need to take out the 32 MB and put in the 64MB. The downfall of this situation is that your upgrade will be only 32 MB since you removed the original 32MB. Some laptops are designed with 2 memory upgrade ports and than you can just add the memory. Most of the time they do not have to be in pairs, you can combine a 16 MB in a slot with a 64MB module in the other slot.  Another info: Almost all laptops have a internal memory on the mother board, and everything you add will be added to that value. For example if your laptop was sold with 16MB base memory and you buy a 32 MB your resulting memory total is now 48MB. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490!

Laptop CD’s and Floppy Drives advice:

1.     “I can’t read the floppy in the floppy drive you sent me” You might have a bad floppy disk, so try getting a blank floppy in the drive and try formatting it.  To format a floppy disk, go to “My Computer” then right click on “3 ½ Floppy”.  Choose the 6th option “Format”. If formatting is successful you have a good floppy drive but you probably have a bad floppy disk. Sometimes a floppy disk will be readable in one computer but not in another. There is nothing we can do about that. As they wear out, the floppy drives will lose alignment. Also check the position of the “Write protect” switch on your floppy. If it is locked, you won’t be able to write or format a floppy disk. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490!

2   “I just plugged in the floppy (or CD-ROM) Drive you sent me and the computer is stuck” The reason for that is that you probably did not power off the computer before switching them. The way to recover is to unplug the computer from the AC power, remove the battery, and leave it like this for a minute. (There is a small battery inside that has to bleed off also. )  After a minute or two, plug in the battery and the AC adapter and power on the computer. Do not swap modules (CDROM or Floppy drives) with power on, this can damage your laptop. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490!

3   “I just can’t read my CD in the CD Drive you sent me” Please check the procedure we have written above. If the condition persists, try a different CD ROM Disk. CD ROM’s that have been made at home with a CD Writer drive, are prone to give you trouble. The same reading problem might appear with re-writable CD’s. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490!

 Laptop Keyboard Advice

1.    “I can’t find a way to remove my old keyboard"

2   “After installing the new keyboard, some keys do not work” Laptop manufacturers do not offer instructions to the public for the removal and replacement of keyboards. However this is not too hard for a computer savvy, mechanically inclined person. Start by unplugging the laptop from the AC Power and removing the battery. Most of the time you will have to remove the screws on the bottom of your laptop. Next the keyboard should become loose. As soon as you can lift it you will have to unplug the ribbon cable from the motherboard. For that use a fine Flathead screwdriver and pull out (about an eight of an inch) the plastic part that latches the ribbon connector. This part is as long as the connector and slides out just a bit to release the pressure applied on the connector. Once it is loose, the ribbon will slide out at once.

To plug it back in, make sure that the connector latch is out and loose, and slide the ribbon inside the connector as far as possible. Next, press down both ends of the connector latch, and this will secure the ribbon. It will also assure a good connection

After putting all the stuff back together, power on the laptop, and make sure the keys work. If a key or a group of keys does not work it is likely that the contact in the connector is not too good. In that case, go back and remove and reinsert the ribbon. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490!

Help on Modems and Network cards:

1.    “I can’t find where to install my PCMCIA Modem/Network card.”

Your PCMCIA Slot is located on the right or the left sides of your laptop as shown in the picture. Many times these slots are covered with a plastic cover or a spring loaded little door. Insert the PCMCIA Card face up. If you have it upside down, it will not go in all the way. Once it is inserted correctly, your laptop will give you a double beep, and the screen will prompt you for a driver. If you still have a hard time finding the slot where the card is supposed to be inserted, see your user manual for the Laptop. We suggest you look up PCMCIA in the index section. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490!

2   “I lost my drivers for the card you sent me”

3   “I need new drivers for a different operating system”

Please see our page http://www.laptopsforless.com/pcmcianetwork.htm  for network cards  and http://www.laptopsforless.com/modems.htm for modems. Find your item and follow the “Drivers” link to download new drivers form the manufacturer’s site. If this advice did not help please call us at 800 556 4490!

4   “The PCMCIA Card I got is too thick to fit in my PCMCIA Slot” You probably bought a Type III PCMCIA Card and you only have a Type II slot which is slimmer. (For your info, Type I standard does not exist anymore.)  You will have to call us for a replacement for the card you got and we will send you a different model that is slimmer. Call us at 800 556 4490!

Toshiba Docking Stations Advice:

1.     “How do I plug in my docking station?” Well, you will actually plug your laptop into the docking station. Your laptop has a male connector in the back (Printer port area) that will insert into the docking station. We recommend you do this with the power off, even when the laptop has utilities for “Hot swapping” (Connecting and disconnecting with power on.)

Next, you will be able to plug in the peripherals into the back of the docking station, such as network cables, external mouse and keyboard, external VGA monitor, parallel and serial port, USB Port… etc.
